Ep 5 : New Hope

"Elmo!! Elmo!!. Wake up!" A strong voice woke me up from a sweet dream I had. "It's your mother!". As soon as I heard the 'Mother' word, I was alarmed! "What's wrong with my mother?" I asked curiously. "She..err..She..".............
"She fell down from a tree when she's swinging to get you food" The owner of the voice was one of my mother's friend. "Fell from a tree? That's impossible. That couldn't be my mommy! My mommy was a good swinger!" I said harshly as I disagreed to what he said. "Yes Elmo, It's true. Your mother was one of the best swingers" He agreed. "WAS? What do you mean by was?" Curiously I asked "Your mother is dead. She was a great swinger but the swing was not the cause. She.. err" I looked straight into his eyes and ran to find my mother. I couldn't believe my ears. No way my mother was dead! This must be some joke!
When I arrived at the catastrophic place, I studded. I saw a body of an Orang Utan lying on the nature carpet. That was not my mother! It could not be my mother! I walked closer to her. She did not breath. She did not cry. She did not even call my name. I touched her fur slowly and I stared at her fur. I was shocked. It was my mother. I rubbed my eyes. The lady was really my mother. "Mommy! Wake up!" I shook her body. Hard. I really could not believe my eyes. "Mommy! Why don't you answer me mommy!" I screamed. She never refused to talk to me even though she was very busy. She answered my call all the time. Who was that woman! She looked like my mother, but she did not act like my mother!. Suddenly I saw there was a hole on her stomach. "What is this?" I asked angrily. "Dear Elmo, now hush dear. Your mother got shot by a human" Aunt Serina said and hugged me from behind. She tried to calm me down. "That's not my mommy! My mommy always talks to me!" I screamed my lungs out. I WANT MY MOMMY!!!
I cried all the way to Aunt Serina's place. Since that gloomy day, I lived with her. She took care of me after my late mother. A week passed by and I never laughed again since that day. All I did was producing tons more tears. It was just not the same without my mother. I still can smell her. I still can hear her voice clearly. I remember how she played with me. Pampered me in her lap. She gave me everything that she could possibly give. She held my hand every second in her life. She kissed my forehead and my cheeks before I go to sleep. She read me bedtime story and she also treated me like a real princess. I miss her so much. I want her to be by my side now.
All of the sudden, many trees had gone missing. The forest were on fire. Orang Utans were everywhere running to save their live, and I just sat here. I did not want to do anything. Aunt Serina died 2 weeks after my mother died. I had no one to take care of me. Many of us had died. I'm 3 years old and I'm left all alone. I ate anything I found. I need my mother, but she will never return to me again. Aunt Buffy and Cookie had ran away. I do not know where they are. I do not want to run away. I know I'm going to die like my mother and my dad. I have nothing else to treasure now.
I was sicked and I had not eaten for 3 days now. I was sure I was going to dying now till a human came and took me away. I had never been this close to a human before. I did not think of anything except to leave it all in God's hand. If they wanted to kill me, go ahead. I had nothing left. The human wrapped me in a blanket and kept me warm. They brought me to a strange place. A big house with little forest at the backyard. Many Orang Utans stay there. At the moment, I realized that I was lucky. The human came to help me. I survived here.
Now...
I'm a happy Orangutan with a happy life in WWF. WWF has saved my life and given me a place to stay, to eat, and to sleep. I met so many Orang Utans here and they are as well happy as I'm. I'm a 20 year old Orang Utan and still young. The story I told you was about my life since I was born till WWF saved me from a disease that attack every Orang Utan in the forest causes by the human. WWF gave new hope for me, and new hope for Orangutans as well.
Thank You WWF, and also Thank You for supporting us.

Poem : The journey begins - 6
Just think of us every time you see the big Blue Moon,
Because we can never grow old .... and we’ll always be near,
You’ll know where to find us, if you wish us to stay here!
And if in the future we return to our trees,
With your great help we’ll experience our home’s tropical breeze,
Unless you tire to care and become bored to explore,
Then our jungle's shadow shall flee, and we'll be seen never more.

Conservation Efforts

The population of P. pygmaeus in Borneo has decreased from 23,000 in 1995 to 15,400 in 1998, a decrease of a third of the population in less than three years. Estimates are similar for P. albelii population decreases in Sumatra.
Agencies are continuing their conservation efforts of Orangutans throughout Indonesia. In Sumatra, roughly 70% of population of P. albelii has been protected by the Leuser Ecosystem in contrast to Borneo where only 16% of Orangutan habitat has been protected.
In addition to the Leuser Ecosystem, agencies are also using zoos to rehabilitate Orangutans that have been recovered from illegal trade or have lost their habitats. Estimates of zoo populations throughout the world are 306 Sumatran Orangutans and 385 Bornean Orangutans.

Destruction of Habitat
The population of Indonesia has grown from roughly 15 million people in 1900 to now over 200 million in 2000.
With population expected to exceed 300 million in less than two decades it is no surprise that the habitat of Orangutans has been increasingly destroyed.
Human population increase coupled with the increase in profitable palm oil plantations has drastically decreased the Orangutan's natural habitat.
The size of Orangutan habitat in Borneo is currently around 155,000 km2 compared to just under 27,000 km2 in Sumatra.
However, in Sumatra the survival rate is predicted to be higher for Orangutans because their main habitat is located along the Barisan Mountain Range in northern Sumatra which is inhabitable for humans.

Illegal Trade & Poaching
Orangutans are constantly struggling with humans for rights to territory.
This struggle has lead to the illegal poaching and capture of Orangutans.
These animals are suffering from a decreased size in habitat that leads Orangutans to travel outside of their normally dense forests and into populated areas where humans will often capture them or shoot them.
Also, in some instances, humans have set fire to Orangutan forests to force out the animal populations and log the resulting forest.
If caught the animals fleeing from these forest fires will be shot or captured and used to gain large profits in illegal animal trading.
This trade began when 1,000 illegally imported infant Orangutans showed up in Taiwan in 1900 and it still continues today, but probably greater numbers.

We need the heart of gold human to save us" He continued his speech with a long sigh. "Mommy! I don't want to die!" I cried. Again. They really have gone too far. Our protector said, they were also our last hope. "Now, I have announced what I wanted to say. Wow! You are a great supporter Hashok. He never gave up showing his support (although the camera is in India). Later in the evening, Hashok told me that he tried to edit the picture but it ended up to be a picture with trees on his back, with leaves (like he planned to do) but only his head was there. His body was accidentally erased during the process. At night, we chit-chatting again and he told me that he did not know how to edit the picture just like he planned to do.
So, I decided to publish a post about his story to show an appreciation for his great continuously support! Orangutan loves you Hashok!

"Hashok is an animal lover! What about you? Be an orangutans lover. You can get a good hug from them because a male orangutan can spread his arms until two metres! What an amazing fact! "
Poem : The journey begins - 5
We’ve already lived longer than some of the stars,
And traveled the rivers of your secret dreams,
As we sailed down an infinite number of streams.
And still we continue to Tokyo, Tunisia, & Mt. Everest,
Maybe we'll be able to visit the rest.
We have all the time and no time, do you understand?
Only you can invite us to visit your land.
But there are still many trees that we'd really wish to climb,
Will you give us that opportunity and plenty of time?

Episode 3 : I made new friends
How we interact

"Awww!!! Aren't they sweet. Do we want to separate them! Don't let one of the weaker die because of deforestration. They are innocent! We MUST save them!!!"
Male Orangutans are the most solitary.
They are intolerant of each other in adulthood and will threaten one another using long calls, starring, shaking of tree branches, and inflating their laryngeal throat pouches.
Sometimes these encounters can escalade to hand to hand combat and even to the death.
Sexual contact with females is the only interaction that males have and it will only last for a few weeks when females are receptive to mating.
After contact, males will abandon females a few days after a female becomes pregnant.
FEMALE
Females are usually accompanied by only one or two young when they travel.
Occasionally groups of females may be seen together with their young, but this does not persist for more than a day normally.
Females are less solitary than males and even semi-social.
It has been observed that females tend to travel with other females of whom they associated with as an adolescent.
Adult females have stable home ranges that may overlap, but each female recognizes clear boundaries to other home ranges.
A female's home range is usually 5 to 6 km2.
Adolescent females are the most sociable of all the Orangutans.
The females can often be seen grooming each other or the males that they may be consorting with.
Interestingly though, once an adolescent female gives birth to her first offspring, she becomes intolerant of other females that she previously had a friendly relationship with.
Adolescent females have been observed to establish home ranges that are close in proximity to their mother's range.
MALE
Male Orangutans have home ranges that are usually larger than their female counterparts.
Adult males will occupy home ranges that intercept two or more ovulating females or they will travel long distances to seek opportunistic females.
Males can be identified based on two criteria: Wanderer Males and Resident Males.
A Resident Male Orangutan will have a specified home range that is similar in size to an adult female's home range.
Wanderer Male Orangutans will travel over a larger area covering more ground looking for females or a steady food source.
Male Orangutans will typically disperse and settle on a home range father from their mothers than what a female would.
However, male settlement depends on the nearby female's ability to conceive and also on food sources.
FEMALE
In addition to adolescent females being social, juvenile Orangutans will establish friendships with their same sex & age mates.
MALE
Also, adult males will normally tolerate sub-adult males, but could easily displace them.
In addition, sub-adult males almost always tolerate one another in most instances.

Orangutan's runny nose
"Must watch Video! Funny + Cute! Doctors can treat orangutans just LIKE humans. Mostly, they share the same diseases AS humans. Runny nose and sneeze are signs of flu just LIKE humans. They do take blood test just like us. This is because THEY SHARE 97% DNA with HUMANS. So why don't we protect the animals that have most things in common with us."

Poem : The journey begins - 4
Episode 2 : My first bath
Ep 1 : I was born“It’s your dad... He...” she couldn’t finish her sentence. A silent tear felt rapidly and ended up on top of my small baby head. “He’s dead. He didn’t get any chance to see you. His first daughter.." she ended stammering and put me slowly on the ground. She had left me alone and went away. I was so scared. Why did she put me on the ground? Where is she going? Is she going to leave me alone? Some bad things popped out through my mind! I don't want to die!! I want to explore the world more. OH for god sake! Please! Please mother! Don't leave me alone, I'm scared and need a protector. I need a guardian to guide me through life. I kept crying and after about half an hour, my mother came back. Thank God she came back!
"Gugugaga!..Gagaga!" I said, practically, babbling to my mother. "What did you say, honey? I'm really sorry for leaving you alone just now, I went to find some water to drink. Let me feed you" she said with her soft voice while feeding me with some milk. I stopped crying and stared at my mother's big, round beautiful eyes. I'm so glad that I have you as my mother. I know you won’t and never leave me alone. I know that you love me!
"Oh honey, I don't have anybody left to hold me tight. I only have you by my side. I want to take a good care of you until my last breath. You are the only thing your dad left for me" she glanced at me and kissed my head.
She hold me tight and took me for a walk. I didn't know where we were going, but I was so excited to explerience the new surrounding. I wanted to know everything that I could possibly know. We stopped at a riverbank. "Gugugaga.Agagagu?" I asked my mother. "Ouh. You want to know why we are here sweetheart?" She smiled at me. For the first time ever, someone understood me. My mother knew what I was talking about."I'm going to give you a bath" she said. WHAT???? A BATH?
I didn't want to take a bath mommy! Please! "Gagagu!. Gagagu!" I cried and begged so hard but she just laughed at me as a response to my reaction. I was happy to see a smile on her face again although I have to face the torture of having my first bath. Wait. What is bath anyway?
"Agagagu?" I asked my mother. "A bath is when your fur will be soaking wet when I splash water on you" she laughed again. "Ouhhh" I said. That was not so bad. I guess. I never had a bath before anyway. Why didn't I get a new experience anyway. She splashed a bit of water on my baby's body and I felt the cold freezing water hitting hard. I stopped crying. It was cold and refreshing! I like the water! I want more!
"You like it, don't you honey?" She said and threw a big smile on me. "You are so cute! I'm going to call you Elmo" So, she said it. She named me Elmo. I liked that name. My name is Elmo. Elmo? Yes, Elmo! Hello world! My name is Elmo! I laughed hard all the way till my mother stopped tickling my body.
"Okay honey, I'm done bathing you. Let's go" She took me away and we were heading towards our home.....
